Sail West Regatta
98 Boats entered the two days of racing on Lake Wabamun, Alberta for the 201 Sail West Regatta. Scheduled training on Thursday and Friday provided only a few whispers of wind on the lake, as did Sundays racing. Saturday made up for it with 15-20 knots and the Race Committees on the 2 courses doing a suberp job getting in 6 races.
The Wabamun host club did a fantastic job, opening their doors to competitors to camp, and enjoy their beautiful lakeside facility. The event was also used as a CYA judge seminar and Race Management training opportunity.
BC was well represented, winning both the Optimist and Laser classes, click here for full results.
2010 BC Championships
The Kamloops Sailing Association hosted the 2010 BC Champs, which also served as the BC Masters Laser Championships.     The clinic scheduled for Thursday and Friday prior to the event saw not a breath of wind on Thursday, where soccer and swimming became the focus, while clinic participants on Friday were treated to an afternoon Nicola Lake 20 knot warm thermal breeze.
Conditions for the regatta couldn't have been more perfect.  A 10-15 knot northerly wind for racing on Saturday, and a classic southerly thermal on Sunday that built to over 20 knots.  Race Committee Ron Rubadeau and his crew did a great job of running 7 races for Optimist, Laser, and Radial fleets.  On shore, Trevor Owen, Commodore Al, and the rest of the Kamloops Sailing Association were unbelievable hosts, providing beautiful lakeside camping, great food, and a wonderful venue.
The only (hicupp) to the entire event was a certain automatic sprinkler that came on at 3 am and gave the Martin family a good bath.  Click here for full results.
BC Sailors Racing in Kiel Week Regatta
Kieler Woche the penultimate stage of the ISAF Sailing World Cup began with strong breezes up to 24 knots and some big waves.
After three races in the Lasers, double world champion and fresh from a third placing at the recent European Championships in Tallinn, Tom Slingsby of Australia opened his Kieler Woche campaign with three bullets, thoroughly relishing the strong breeze. Simon Grotelüschen (GER) holds second, one point ahead of Michael Leigh of Canada in the118 boat fleet.
Other BC Results include Hunter Lowden 49er currently in 16th, Keamia Rassa Laser Radial 33rd, and 470 Jen Braem and Erin Flannigan 35th.

BC Sailing Hosts Intro to Sailing to First Nations Youth
On June 12th, BC Sailing with Burrard Yacht Club put on a one day program for first nations kids to get introduced to sailing. After 2 months of advertising on the 3 North Van reserves, 11 kids attended from 10-2 and sailed 2 sessions. We had one top sailor help out who himself is first nations and is going to the BC Games this year to race the Optimist. The 11 kids loved the sailing and all 11 signed up for a 2 week White sail program this summer at Burrard Yacht CLub.
BC Sailing provided 4 coaches and Burrard YAcht Club provided one coach as well as the equipment. It was a very successful event with over 6000 people watching the wood boat show at the same time.
A big thank you to CYA and the special initiatives for supporting these keen sailors in their quest for learning how to sail this summer. From what we heard, the sport of sailing will be increasing in size on the different reserves as kids are looking for new sports to try and many have boating in their blood and wanted to try sailing.
CYA Sail West
Plan your sailors’ travel to Alberta for 4 days of training and racing activity with fellow sailors from Western Canada! Mid-July will see sailors; their families and coaches finding their way to the Wabamun Sailing Club.
