When the instructor feels ready, the instructor can arrange for an evaluation. There are evaluation clinics held in September, or in some cases an Evaluator may come to your club or school. There is a fee of minimum $100 for this service depending on where and when the evaluation takes place (evaluations cost more when the Evaluator has to travel). Your evaluation must take place by December 31 of the year after you became trained. For example, if you received your trained status in May 2010, you must complete your evaluation by December 31, 2011.
At an evaluation, the instructor is expected to teach one lesson on land and on the water to a group of sailors. A standardized lesson plan (typed) has to be submitted to the evaluator prior to the evaluation. The evaluation criteria are similar to the assessment criteria in the LTS Coach Clinics. Upon a successful evaluation, the instructor is now certified and can continue as an instructor and take more courses to further his/her instructor skills. If the instructor is not successful, the instructor will remained “trained” and will have to do another evaluation before moving to the certified level or taking the next course.
