2012 Coaching Courses

The dates for the 2012 coaching courses have now been posted, and online registration is open.  Be sure to sign up early, as many courses fill up fast!
CANSail
The Learn to Sail programs in Canada are undergoing a major change in 2012.  CANSail has updated sailing skills, resources and encourages more time on the water.  It is focused on teaching lifelong sport based on an athlete's development.  Watch the video below, and see our CANSail page for more information.  Coaches and instructors must also become CANSail trained - more information is available on the coaching page.

JUDGES CLINIC
Saturday, February 25, 2012, 9 am to 5 pm at West Vancouver YC
This Judges Clinic is for racers who are interested in learning more about judging, or becoming certified or recertified as a Club Judge, or for certified judges wanting a refresher course. And it is beneficial to Event Organizers who implement Races and Regattas.
The Judges Clinic is useful for Racers who want to know more about Rules & Tactics, and Protests & Hearings. Racers will benefit from learning how to prepare and present a protest, as well as gaining insight on how judges work in a protest hearing, as well as learning the pitfalls that result in losing a protest.
Racers will find this clinic informative and fun with interactive discussions of rule scenarios depicted with computer animations, and details of the tactics employed by the top racers, as well as getting involved with hands-on role-play of mock protest hearings in small groups from the perspective of the racer, and the judge.

Sail Melbourne Regatta Report
The first ISAF World Cup Regatta ran November 6 - 12. Fleets were smaller than normal, but some highly ranked sailors still racing using it for tune-up for the upcoming ISAF World Championships in Perth in December.
BC had 3 sailors competing in Melbourne, Zac Plavsic in the Men's RSX class and Luke Ramsay & Mike Leigh in the 470.
Luke & Mike finished 7th / 14 boats, but posted some excellent individual race scores: a 2nd, a pair of 3rds, and a pair of 4ths.
Zac had an excellent event, finishing on the podium with a 3rd / 11 boards. Here is a photo of Zac receiving his medal along with his Dutch and New Zealand training partners.
Sail West Rotation
Sail West is the 17 and under regional championship (there are also master sailors etc participating) hosted by a local club in BC every 4th year. It is essential that the club applying to host has an active volunteer base, a long term plan for development of race officials as well as an active racing group where sailors participate in Sail West events in the years leading up to hosting this event at their own club. BC is hosting Sail West in 2012 at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club the second weekend in August. BC will again host this event in 2016 and again in 2020. If your club would like to host Sail West, please click HERE for more information. If you have any questions, please contact Tine Moberg-Parker at tmpsailing@shaw.ca , The rotation for 19 and under championships and the open nationals will be posted at the beginning of November, 2011.

The BC Sailing Safety at Sea program offered its inaugural course this past weekend, April 2-3

The two day course started Saturday, at the West Vancouver Yacht Club, where the sold-out class of twenty-four experienced sailors were immersed in topics including care and maintenance of safety equipment, storm sail, heavy weather, damage control, hypothermia and man overboard.  Instructors accredited by BC Sailing and CYA divided the class into breakout groups which faced emergency scenarios, developed action plans and received feedback from the whole class.  Sunday, the course moved to BCIT's Marine Campus where professional instructors led the class through sessions on fire, emergency communications and signaling.  The class completed a full set of in-the-water survival training drills, clothed in wet weather gear, with and without lifejackets and crotch straps, using individual and group survival techniques, and deploying, boarding and righting  life rafts.   Participants emerged from the training tank wet, cold, tired, and raving about the lessons learned. more...

Please visit the course page for more information on upcoming courses.

Changes to CYA Recertification Policy
As of July 1st, 2010, the CYA has changed its policy with respect to LTS/R/W Instructor Recertifications.  This responsibility has been turned over to the PSAs.  For information on the changes goto the CYA website at www.sailing.ca    Instructors will now have to:
• Attend an appropriate (coaching related) Professional Development (PD) module conducted by a LF or MLF during which the recertifying coach is evaluated on professionalism; OR
• Attend a portion of a technical clinic to demonstrate on land and on water coaching conducted by a LF or MLF (including successful evaluation of safety and professionalism); OR
• Successfully complete a re-evaluation by an Evaluator
LTS/R/W Instructors who have allowed their certification(s) to lapse will also have to submit a coaching/sailing resume and reference letter.
If you are in need of recertification, please email Nancy at crew@bcsailing.bc.ca and recertification programs will be availalble in the spring of 2011.
