Note: courses require a minimum of 6 candidates. BC Sailing will send out an email at least 1 week before the start of the course to confirm the location, times and inform candidates of details.  Be sure to sign up early, as many courses fill up fast.

CANSail Fundamental:

This is the theory course all coaches must take prior to their technical course.  The course is offered over two full days.

CANSail Technical Course:

The CANSail Technical course is the practical application of the theory learned in the Fundamental course.  It gives coaches a chance to get on the water adn coach real sailors with assistance from Learning Facilitators.
Prerequisites: CANSail Fundamental, Pleasure Craft Operator Card, minimum sailing level (see course for specific minimum requirement)
Fee: $275

Coach Boat Safety

This is a practical, on-water safety course that will prepare coaches for possible emergencies.  It is expected that coaches review this material prior to the course.
Prerequisites: Pleasure Craft Operator Card, Standard First Aid with CPR-C

Wet Feet/Opti Module

The Opti Module is a one-day professional development course designed for coaches who will be working with young athletes age 5-13 in optimist dinghies.  Emphasis is on rigging for safety and speed and sailing techniques.
Prerequisites: Trained CANSail Coach (any level)
Fee: $90

Community Instructor Module

The Community Instructor module is an introduction to coaching course for new instructors who want to start as an assistant coach or volunteer with a sailing program.  Community instructors are "Instructors in Training" cannot certify CANSail levels and may not be eligible for Sail Canada Coach Insurance.  This course includes the Coach Boat Safety course.
Prerequisites: 15 years old, PCOC, Standard First Aid, CANSail 3
Fee: $175

Optimist Race (CANSail 3) Module

This course is for coaches with some basic optimist experience.  Candidates will work with optimist racing team sailors and will focus on developing racing skills and new coaching techniques specific to opti sailing and coaching sailors ages 10-14.
Prerequisites: Trained CANSail Coach (any level), Optimist experience, preferably Opti Module
Fee: $150

Chutes & Wires

This two-day professional development course focuses specifically on double-handedboats.  The main focus will be rigging and skill development in 420s, with some discussion about 470s, 29ers and 49ers.  Upon successful completion of this course, coaches will be trained to teach Chutes and Wires.
Prerequisites: Trained CANSail Coach (CANSail 5 and Chutes & Wires 1, or LTR+Silver is required to teach Chutes and Wires, but all coaches and sailors are welcome to take the course for their own professional development)
Fee: $150

Program Manager

The Program Manager Module is open to coaches and others looking to take on an administrative role within their learn to sail program.  Topics covered to include marketing, registration, communication and safety.  The course is not recommended for first and second year instructors.
Prerequisites: none
Fee: $200

*If you are interested in taking a Program Manager Course, please email athlete.dev@bcsailing.bc.ca.  If there is sufficient interest, we will schedule a course for spring 2015.

CANSail Accreditation for Existing Coaches

This module is required for all exisiting coaches wanting to coach CANSail levels and currently only trained or certified in the traditional (eg. White Sail, Bronze Sail) learn to sail system.  Please contact athlete.dev@bcsailing.bc.ca if you wish to take the online training module.
Prerequisites: Trained White or Bronze Sail Coach
Fee: free

Coach Evaluation

Evaluations can be arranged by contacting BC Sailing at crew@bcsailing.bc.ca.
Fee: $100

Refund Policy for all courses:

Course fees are fully refundable until 14 days prior to the course.  Within 14 days of the course start date, cancellations are subject to a $30 cancellation fee.  There is no fee to change course dates or locations, provided there is space available.  Please email athlete.dev@bcsailing.bc.ca if you wish to change course dates.
